What People Do After Winning Big Sums of Money

August 30, 2016 by Sally

For many of us, going through the motions of something like buying a daily or weekly lottery ticket is exactly that — just going through the motions. We never really expect to win anything, let alone an insane jackpot of upwards of a £100m. This applies even to some of those lotteries which are operated off-shore, like perhaps the mega millions lotto which is accessible online and is a US-run lottery open to bettors from beyond the borders of the USA.

Well the super lucky people who do go on to experience winning colossal sums of money such as those paid out in big international lotteries often tell a story of how they never really expected it either, although some report experiencing some strange sensations they can’t quite explain, leading up to their winnings. The “air just felt different,” you’ll often here them reporting — those winners who don’t mind having their new millionaire statuses shared with the world that is.

But what exactly do people do after winning big sums of money, not necessarily the lottery?

Pay off their debts

Perhaps the most sensible thing to do, a lot of big winners do indeed endeavour to pay off all their debts before they even begin to think about spending their new money millions on anything their hearts desire. Older winners who have children often demonstrate just how the love a parent never dies by paying off their children’s debts as well or giving them nice cash injections to do with whatever they please.

Go on a wild shopping spree

Yes, many big winners simply cannot resist the urge to go on the shopping spree of their lives. Who can blame them? Suddenly coming into more money that you’ve perhaps ever had pass through your hands in your entire live can spark a mega shopping spree, but exercising some control should naturally always follow. Very shortly after their mega shopping spree, a lot of big winners realise that there’s more to life than just having a lot of money to blow at will, which is when one of the biggest life lessons kicks-in in a rather practical manner.

Travel the world

Another big favourite amongst big winners is finally being able to hop on a plane and travel to whichever place they may have made a mental note of, whether through watching travel shows or through word-of-mouth reviews by people close to them who’ve been to where they want to go as well.

Compile and race through their bucket list

Bucket lists are also often just passing thoughts and mental concoctions which are dreamt up rather vividly by many people, yet they realistically never really expect to cross off even half of the items on their bucket lists. Winning some mega bucks makes pursuing one’s bucket list quite possible, with many people taking the opportunity presented to them by their big money winnings as the ideal time to start compiling one and then crossing items off and even adding some as they go along.

Blow it all

The most unfortunate thing people tend to do with their big money winnings is to simply blow it all, often leaving them in a financial situation that’s far worse than what it was before they won some big money.

What would you do if you came into some big money winnings?
