What’s the Deal with Designer?

June 10, 2013 by Sally

When it comes to fashion, there seems to be a big divide over consumers who buy designer clothing and those who don’t. If you belong to the latter group, you probably can’t imagine wasting your hard-earned cash on a new pair of jeans or shoes simply because a big name designer put his or her name on it. Yet having a few high-end pieces in your wardrobe may actually turn out to be a smarter investment than what you think. Here are just a few benefits to buying designer:

Longevity

While you may grumble at the higher price tags of designer brands, consider this: high-end pieces are made from the very best fabrics on the market, meaning that they cost more to make. Plus, investing in clothing made from high quality fabrics means that your favourite pair of jeans will last through several seasons and the strap of your handbag won’t break when you’re out running errands. Simply put, designer clothes are more durable than pieces you’ll find at discount retailers, meaning that you won’t have to waste your paycheque on a replacement down the road.

Comfort

Another big benefit to buying designer clothes is the added comfort you’ll enjoy when you slip into that new blouse or pair of jeans. That’s because designer threads are made from of the lushest and softest fabrics in the world—silk, stain, cashmere, and Pima cotton—meaning that they won’t irritate your skin. This point is especially important to remember when you’re shopping for infants and small children, whose skin is extremely sensitive to irritants. Instead of dressing them in itchy cotton/synthetic blends, shop designer baby clothes online instead to ensure they’re getting the very best. You may even want to look for pieces made from 100% organic materials to reduce their exposure to the harmful chemicals and bleaches that are used in traditional clothes-making processes.

Shopping Savvy

Of course, in order to make the most of your money, you should avoid shopping trends and invest in basic wardrobe staples instead. Think about the items you and your kids wear most often and let that be your guide as you shop for designer pieces. Remember that consignment stores and online swaps are great places to find designer pieces at discount prices, as are clearance racks and “sales” tabs! Finally, make sure to sign up to receive e-mail alerts from your favourite retailers so that you can be the first to know when they’re having special sales and discounts on high-end pieces. Shopping designer doesn’t have to break the bank; in fact, if you take good care of your clothes, you’ll be able to depend on your favourite pieces for many seasons to come!
